Angelica Liv was born in Bucaramanga, a city in north-central Colombia where tropical and dessert lands meet. Liv found space for growing creatively in the Berlin University of Arts, Musabi Tokyo and Jorge Tadeo Lozano Bogotá but the folk and colorful aesthetic traditions of her homeland continue to be the major influence on her illustrated works. She has lived in France, USA and Japan before setting base in the city of Berlin where she is currently working from since 2012.
Her creative practice has developed around power animals and the deconstruction of clichés and stereotypes that allows her art to connect her inner narratives to an outer world. Producing work across a multitude of mediums, including acrylic painting, digital animation and Japanese ink illustration, she presents a variety of hyper-personal experiences with an innate playfulness that invites the audience to open their minds to understanding the diversity of individual lived experiences. Particularly those that happen outside of gender binaries and reality checks.
On a more personal level, Liv has grown close to her practice as a coping mechanism to navigate the discomfort caused by being a patchwork kid and is influenced by post-colonialist history in an effort to decolonize artistic practices. She is very interested in primitive cultures as she believes they can express core emotions and universal human values of life. In 2021, her debut show titled "Together, in the end", represents a departure from using humor as a way to process struggle, and a new openness to showcasing vulnerability and pain in a sincere but hopeful voice.
She is currently focused on commercial work while newly apprenticing tattoo as an extension of her illustrative form. For editorial, campaign or painting commissions send an email to liv.collector@gmail.com or for updates directly on Instagram typing @angelicaliv
